What is Safe Place?

  • National Safe Place is an outreach program designed to provide access to immediate help and safety for all youth in crisis. Locally, Safe Place is a community initiative that designates fire stations, police stations and other government agencies and youth-friendly businesses as safe places where youth can access help and supportive resources. These Safe Place locations extend the doors of Youth Bridge to create a safety net for youth in crisis.

How can I recognize a Safe Place?

  • Safe Place Sites are identified by the bright yellow and black diamond-shaped “Safe Place” signs and/or decals.

Who should use Safe Place?

  • This program is designed specifically for any youth under the age of 18 that may be having problems at home, suffering from abuse or neglect, lost or in some dangerous situation, riding with a drunk or unsafe driver, or just need to talk about a problem.

How does Safe Place work?

The following steps describe how Safe Place works:

  • The youth arrives at a designated Safe Place location (identified by a Safe Place sign or decal) and tells the first available employee that they are in need of help. NOTE: Many times a youth may not communicate the need, so advice is for employees to be on the lookout for youth who may be loitering or just hanging around and ask if he/she needs assitance.
  • The employee gets a general idea of what is happening and finds a quiet, comfortable place for the youth to wait while they call the local Safe Place agency. The youth is informed that a trained representative will come and meet with the youth.
  • The location calls and identifies itself as a safe place to the Safe Place representative and describes the situation and give the location.
  • Within 20-30 minutes, the Safe Place staff member will arrive and show identification and talk with the youth about the appropriate next steps.
  • The Safe Place staff will either notify family members or guardians to let them know that their child is safe, or may call the police to investigate the situation, or the staff will take the youth to a Safe Place or Emergency Shelter.

TXT 4 HELP

  • TXT 4 HELP is a 24-hour text-for-support service offered by National Safe Place to help teens access immediate help and safety.
  • Teens can text the word “safe” and their current location (address/city/state) to 69866.
  • Within seconds, users will receive a message with the closest Safe Place location and contact number for local youth shelter.
  • Teens will then have the option to reply with “2chat” to text interactively with a mental health professional for more help.
